How It Works

This calculator uses weighted averages to determine your current grade. You can either:

  • Leave all weight fields empty for equal weighting (weights will be assumed equal during calculation)
  • Enter custom weights for each assignment (all assignments must have weights if any one has a weight)

The formula used is: Sum(Grade × Weight) ÷ Sum(Weights) = Final Grade.

Understanding Grade Calculation

Grade calculation is an essential part of academic assessment, helping students track their performance and understand what they need to achieve their desired outcomes. Different educational systems use various grading scales and methods to evaluate student performance.

Weighted Grades

Many courses assign different weights to various components such as assignments, quizzes, exams, and participation. This means that some components contribute more to the final grade than others. For example, a final exam might be worth 40% of the total grade, while weekly assignments might each be worth only 2%. Understanding these weights is crucial for accurately calculating your current grade and determining what you need on remaining assessments.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

GPA is a standardized way to measure academic achievement across courses. In the United States, GPA is typically calculated on a 4.0 scale, where an A is worth 4 points, a B is worth 3 points, and so on. Some institutions use weighted GPAs that assign more points to honors or advanced placement courses. Cumulative GPA considers all courses taken throughout a student's academic career at an institution.

Final Grade Calculation

Calculating what grade you need on a final exam to achieve a desired course grade involves working backward from your target. By considering your current grade, the weight of the final exam, and your target grade, you can determine the minimum score needed on the final. This can help you set realistic goals and prioritize your study efforts.
