About Time Zones

Time zones are regions of the globe that observe a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Time zones tend to follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions because it is convenient for areas in close commercial or other communication to keep the same time.

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)

UTC is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. It is essentially the same as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) but is measured using atomic clocks for greater precision. Time zones around the world are expressed as positive or negative offsets from UTC.

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Many regions observe daylight saving time (DST), which involves advancing clocks by one hour during summer months so that evening daylight lasts longer while sacrificing normal sunrise times. The dates of DST transitions vary across different countries and regions.

International Date Line

The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line on the Earth's surface that demarcates the change of one calendar day to the next. Crossing the IDL traveling eastward results in a day being subtracted, while crossing westward results in a day being added.
